The Beginning
Herdmate’s story begins in a historic textile city in India, once known as the Manchester of the East.
Our founder grew up surrounded by fabrics. Her father worked in the textile business and instilled a simple philosophy early in life:
“Buy the best, to avoid the need for constant replacement.”
By touch alone, she learned to distinguish between natural and synthetic fabrics. Those early experiences built a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, durability, and the idea of owning fewer but better things.
Discovering Cashmere and Alpaca
Years later, travel would deepen this connection to natural fibres.
In 2016, a journey to the mountains of Ladakh introduced her to cashmere (pashmina), a fibre unlike any she had experienced before. Having struggled with eczema and sensitivity to wool, she discovered that cashmere felt remarkably gentle against her skin.
A year later in New Zealand, she encountered alpaca fibre, known for its hollow structure, natural insulation, and exceptional softness.

A Mother’s Quest
Everything changed in 2021 when she became a mother.
Her son developed eczema at just five months old, beginning a cycle familiar to many parents: itching, infections, sleepless nights, and constant attempts to keep him comfortable.
Sleep sacks and blankets on the market offered few solutions.
Cotton options lacked warmth for Canadian winters.
Synthetic fabrics caused overheating and irritation.
Merino wool contained lanolin, a common allergen.
Searching for something better, she returned to the fibres she trusted most.
Using her own cashmere and alpaca scarves, she stitched a sleep sack lining for her baby. For crib sheets, she chose silk to reduce friction and allow creams to remain effective on the skin.
The change was immediate.
His skin began to calm. The constant cycle of irritation eased. And for the first time in months, the family experienced restful nights.
That moment planted the seed for Herdmate, a brand built on the belief that what touches a child’s skin should come only from nature.
